Working Together – Tools, Strategies and Speculations
Methods Lab II Practices, Concepts and Media in Design
Workshop by Sam Hopkins @ KISD
As contemporary creative practitioners we often find ourselves working with other people. Sometimes this is simply because they have skills that we do not, although often we share collective aims with the people with whom we work. But what is common to all collaborative constellations is the foundational question; how to work together in a way which is fair and respectful for everyone involved?
This workshop hopes to give students a set of tools with which to critically reflect upon, and engage in, the act of working together. We will look at participation, collaboration and co-production as different modes of working. Building on this framework, we will analyse a broad range of projects, including work by the students, in terms of authorship and agency. Finally, we will think together about ways in which we can participate, collaborate and co-produce projects as equitably as possible in a world which is structurally and systemically unfair.

This text is the result of a collective-writing experiment on the topic of collaboration. The co-creators of the text worked with an Etherpad, to anonymously write a digital document together which was then collectively in analog format (eg with pens and scissors).
